Pizzo is an ancient fishing town. Situated on a promontory overlooking the Gulf of Sant’Eufemia, known as the Coast of the Gods, it faces the Aeolian Islands and offers beautiful views and deep red sunsets over the Stromboli volcano. Its enchanting features make it a favorite tourist destination.
Perched above the sea, the town is rich in history and tradition. Among the narrow streets of the historic center is Piazza della Repubblica, featuring a beautiful terrace overlooking the sea. Of significant historical interest is the Aragonese Castle, built as a fortress, where Joachim Murat, King of Naples and brother-in-law of Napoleon Bonaparte, was imprisoned and executed. Inside the castle is the Murat Provincial Museum. You can also visit the Sea Museum, which houses collections of crustaceans, shells, sponges, madrepores, and some stuffed sharks, as well as tools and artifacts related to boats and fishing.
Pizzo was famous as a source of delicious fish, primarily tuna. For centuries, during May and June, millions of tuna reached the beaches of the Gulf of St. Eufemia, leading to the establishment of the famous tuna fisheries of Pizzo and Bivona and the production of tuna in olive oil. A visit to the unique Piedigrotta Church is fascinating; located by the sea and carved into the tuff rock by sailors spared during a shipwreck and devoted to the Madonna, it is locally called “A Madonneja” and is also one of the most beautiful beaches in the area.
